Annual Water Disinfection Change
Each year, Cary joins neighboring communities in temporarily suspending the use of ammonia in our water treatment process, following the state’s recommendation for systems that use chloramines to switch briefly to chlorine only. During this time, water is released from fire hydrants to ensure chlorine flows throughout the system. This routine process helps maintain our award-winning water quality and keeps our water safe.
From February 27 – April 6, water may contain chlorine or a mix of chlorine and ammonia. If you use water for kidney dialysis, fish aquariums, or other chlorine-sensitive purposes, please plan accordingly. You may notice a stronger chlorine odor, but the water remains safe to drink. Questions? Call 311 within town limits, (919) 469-4000 outside Cary, or visit carync.gov/waterchange.

Join Us in Building a More Sustainable Future
Understanding Your Flood Risk
Just one inch of floodwater can cause more than $25,000 in damage. Flooding is the most common — and often most costly — natural disaster, and more than 30% of flood insurance claims come from outside mapped FEMA flood zones. This year, Cary achieved a Class 7 rating in FEMA’s Community Rating System, which means residents in Special Flood Hazard Areas may qualify for additional discounts on flood insurance premiums. Learn about your flood risk and explore insurance options. Contact Cary Stormwater or call 311 and visit FloodSmart.gov for details on flood insurance and coverage options.
